A SPECIAL ceremony has been held to celebrate outstanding contributions made to the town by community-minded Whitchurch residents.

The celebration was set up by late Whitchurch resident Peter Pelling, who sought to make it "for the people, by the people".

Whitchurch mayor Councillor Steve Robbins, who presented four people with their awards, said: "It was quite a privilege to be involved in the night and present the four people who have done so much for the local community with their awards.

"By chance, all those nominated are hugely involved in youth projects, which are so important in making Whitchurch thrive.

"Afterwards, it was fantastic because everyone was in very good humour and talked with each other about the important work they carry out."

The winners were:

  • Kath Donaldson, of London Road - her award was for helping as a Beaver leader within the Whitchurch Scout Group. She also helps with the weekly mother and toddler group and collects for the annual Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
  • Lyn Fuoco, from Bere Hill Close - was honoured for her involvement in the Youth Initiative, helping as the leader for the Tuesday group for 14 to 20-year-olds. She also runs a mother and toddler group and has been a foster carer for more than 20 years.
  • John Wiltshire, of Evingar Road - his award was for his work with the Youth Initiative, having been a founding member in 2005. He is the leader of the "Chill 2 This" youth club, an over-11 group that supports other worthy causes with fundraising events.
  • Toby St Quintin, from St Mary Bourne - his award was for his dedication to Whitchurch Scout Group. He is a warranted Scout leader, working with both the Cub packs and helping with the Beavers when he can.
