COMPLAINTS about a building site in Overton are being investigated by borough council officers.

Residents and Overton Parish Council have complained to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council about building firm SJ Smith & Sons, which is working on a property in The Green.

They claim materials from another building site are being dumped on public land in The Green.

Laura Harley, clerk to Overton Parish Council, said: "A number of people have already contacted the borough regarding this application with no appreciable results.

"The parish council would like to state it isn't against one-off in-fill housing. However, it's important the developer respects the local environment and that the lives of neighbouring residents are not disrupted.

"There is particular concern in this case as the applicant is due to build another house adjacent to this location in the near future."

Ian Tilbury, borough councillor for Overton, Laverstoke and Steventon, said: "It's appalling what is going on and the fact that the council has taken so long to do anything about it."

Nicky Linihan, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council's head of planning and transport, said: "Some of the issues raised in the letter from the parish council are outside the remit of the borough council.

"We're investigating the concern that building waste, unrelated to the development, is being brought to the site and will update the parish council in due course."

Miss Linihan said complaints had also been received about the house being marketed as having four bedrooms when the original permission granted was for three.

However, she said, a fresh application for a four-bedroomed house on the site had been received.

Nobody from SJ Smith & Sons was available for comment.
