PEOPLE in Basingstoke are being offered the chance to see the Philharmonia Orchestra, under its new Principal Conductor.

It will be the only chance to hear this concert outside London.

The Anvil’s 2022/23 International Concert Series opens on Friday, September 23 with the return of Anvil Arts’ Orchestra in Partnership, the Philharmonia Orchestra, under its new Principal Conductor.

Santtu-Matias Rouvali conducts an exciting programme which begins with the exuberant Masquerade by Anna Clyne, inspired by London’s bustling 18th-century pleasure gardens, and a perfect celebratory curtain-raiser to the first concert of the season.

This is followed by John Adams’ Must the Devil have all the good tunes?, a piano concerto in all but name with its propulsive outer movements and a meditative central section.  Adams describes the piece as full of “tongue-in-cheek wickedness” and “outrageous virtuosity” - perfect for the fabulously talented Icelandic pianist Vikingur Olafsson who joins the orchestra this evening.

The final piece is Mahler’s much-loved Symphony no 5. The piece opens with a grave march, followed by a stormy movement with fluctuating moods.
