THIEVES using a stolen JCB to try and make off with an ATM have caused huge destruction at a village Post Office.

Police were called to the postal store in Grand Parade, Hook in the early hours of Saturday morning after receiving reports of an attempted theft.

The offenders used a stolen JCB to ram the ATM from the front of the shop, which was found intact a few metres away from the scene.

The suspects are then thought to have fled in a silver Land Rover last seen heading towards the M3 at around 1.45am to 1.50am. Police say the vehicle would have had damage to the rear.

Pictures shared on social media show both the JCB and ATM left abandonned outside the devastated shop front. Wiring and sockets were dangling from the ceiling while glass and debris lay strewn across the car park.

Officers have since launched an appeal to try and locate the suspects.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "If you have any information about the whereabouts of the silver Land Rover or have any information that could help officers with their enquiries please contact police on 101 quoting 44220338158."

The Post Office has been closed "until further notice" while police investigations and significant repair works take place.

In the meantime, residents have clubbed together to start a fundraiser for the current postmasters, Kevin and Jackie, in what is a resilient showing of community spirit.
