A REMARKABLE wartime show celebrating the Women's Land Army rolls into Basingstoke in September - and you can win free tickets with the Gazette.

Apollo Theatre Company presents Lilies on the Land at The Haymarket on Friday, September 30.

Lilies on the Land is a truly remarkable and sparkling piece of theatre which celebrates an extraordinary episode in Britain's history - the Women's Land Army - formed in the First World War.

These gripping but charming tales, chart the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work endless, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the war effort.

But how will these women, hailing from all different walks of life, torn from their families and bereft of all basic home comforts, deal not only with the hardships of farming life and the pressures of war, but also with being outsiders in new surroundings? The show is set to reveal all.

Based on hundreds of letters from and interviews with the original Land Girls, Lilies on the Land is a revealing, funny, wonderfully moving and utterly captivating portrait of some of Britain's pluckiest, unsung heroes.

Land Girls traditionally did a wide range of jobs, including milking cows, lambing, managing poultry, ploughing, gathering crops, digging ditches, catching rats and carrying out farm maintenance work while men where out on military duties.

The Gazette has teamed up with The Haymarket to give two lucky people the chance to win a pair of tickets to see the show.

To get your hands on one of the pairs of tickets, all you have to do is answer this question: During which war was the Women’s Land Army formed?

Send your answers to competitions@anvilarts.org.uk with the subject line reading Gazette Lilies by September 7 for your chance to win.
