A GOLF club is hosting a charity day in memory of a former member to raise money for a Basingstoke based cancer charity.

Worplesdon Golf Club has joined forces with Heartburn Cancer UK to raise awareness and support the pursuit of early diagnosis of oesophageal cancer.

The golf club has named HCUK as its charity of the year for 2022, and the club hopes to raise important funds and awareness of common symptoms of oesophageal cancer, such as persistent heartburn.

The club will be holding an array of events to raise money for the charity, the largest of which is a charity golf day on September 13, taking place on Worplesdon’s fabulous course.

Worplesdon Golf Club joined with Heartburn Cancer UK following the death of former men’s captain John Harridge, who died after being diagnosed with Stage 4 oesophageal cancer in 2020.

Like many others, he had little to no indication of symptoms, only experiencing mild heartburn, before receiving a devastating 3-month life expectancy diagnosis.

He died on May 26 at the age of 61, after a four-and-a-half-month battle with cancer.

Jane Poyntz, Worplesdon ladies captain, explained how much the charity golf day means to the club, saying: “John was a well-respected member, and men’s captain, of the club.

“His death has had an impact on all his peers here at Worplesdon and this is our chance to give something back.

“Heartburn Cancer UK are determined that lives, like John’s need not be lost and raising awareness of the dangers of heartburn as well as aiding early diagnosis are key to preventing oesophageal cancer.”

Teams of four are invited to enjoy the day, which will also include breakfast, a four-course lunch, a raffle and a silent auction.

Worplesdon’s men’s captain, Simon Tedrake said: “We have a great day planned, which will include beat the pro on our feature pond hole and the chance to win a car for a hole in one.

“Come and enjoy 18 holes on one of Surrey’s most prestigious and picturesque golf courses and support a fantastic charity.

“Whether it’s a game with friends, clients or team building, this is a day not to be missed.”
