A head and a torso of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s scarecrow, that was vandalised in Old Basing, have been found in the bushes near a business property.

The top half of the mannequin has been rescued by the staff at the AA headquarters at Fanum House in Basingstoke.

Last week, the Gazette had reported about a case of Boris Johnson’s scarecrow being vandalised and its top half being taken away by a “group of young lads”.

Peter Brickell, who made the scarecrow for the Old Basing village carnival committee competition, said the incident happened when he and his wife were away from home.

The top half of the scarecrow has now been found in the bushes by the AA headquarters.

After various passers-by were alarmed to see the torso and the head in the bushes, AA’s security guards investigated the mannequin and first threw ‘Boris’ in a skip

However, AA receptionist Gill Eagle, who had read the story in the Gazette, rescued the mannequin from the skip to reunite it with Mr Brickell.

An AA spokesperson said: “The AA is now trying to reunite the legless top half of the Boris mannequin with his bottom half, but unfortunately his famous blond locks seem to have gone missing - perhaps taken by a passing fox.

“We think it only right that as he was rescued by the AA he should be returned to in an AA van. At first we thought about sending him to Downing Street but have now found out he resides in Old Basing.

“Our security didn’t realise it was Boris when he was thrown in the skip, but he does seem at home in the post room.”
