It has been five days since building contractors accidentally damaged underground network cables, but many Basingstoke residents continue to be without internet and phonelines.

Hampshire County Council, for which the contractors were working when they damaged the network cables, again apologised to the residents this morning (Monday) and said its contractors have been working with Openreach during the weekend in repairing the cabling.

The council said on Twitter: “We're sorry that people are still experiencing problems with their internet and phone services in the Basingstoke area. Our contractors have been working 24/7 over the weekend to support Openreach in repairing the cabling.

“We are seeking an update from Openreach with regards to when services are likely to be fully restored and will post further information about that when we have it.”

The Gazette has also contacted Openreach for an update on the ongoing repair works.

It has confirmed an update will be given at 2pm about the progress of works and when will the networks be completely restored in Basingstoke.

Hospitals, businesses and around 4,000 Basingstoke families had their internet cut off on Wednesday evening after Hampshire County Council’s contract workers accidentally damaged an underground network cable while undertaking the Brighton Hill roundabout piling works.

On Friday, an Openreach spokesperson said the repairs to its fibreoptic network were progressing well, but it would take longer to fix its copper network.

This means, many households and businesses in Basingstoke that have a copper network will not have the services for the next few days.
