A FISH shop has received an award from the Royal British Legion.

Oliver’s Fish and Chips in Old Basing has received an award from Old Basing Royal British Legion in recognition of the support the shop has given the charity.

The fish and chips shop were nominated for and won the title of Best Supporting Business to a Branch Within Hampshire award at the January County Conference.

The shop was nominated by Hampshire Golf Club secretary Rick Bourne for its continued support of the Royal British Legion, including offering vouchers as prizes for fund-raising golf days.

Rick said: “I’ve been running Poppy Appeal fund-raising golf days for many years here and have frequently asked Oliver’s if they could donate a voucher for use in their restaurant towards our raffle or auction that followed the golf day prize giving.

“These events have raised several thousands of pounds over that time so without generosity such as that offered by local companies, especially Oliver’s, this might not have been possible”.

Fish shop managers Neil and Fiona Johnson were formally presented with a framed certificate by Royal British Legion Old Basing Branch Chairman Ian Greenway.

Neil said that they were “proud to have received this recognition”, and that the certificate would be immediately mounted on the wall of the fish shop’s adjoining restaurant for all to see.

Fiona said: “I was very happy, and I was very happy for everyone who worked here as well because they are a lovely, lovely team.

“It’s not just two people, there is a whole team involved with this, that all work hard and do their bit.

“It’s not just me and Neil who want to take the credit, it’s all the staff at Oliver’s, who all play a part somehow.”

The RBL is not the only charity that Oliver’s supports.

The shop has also supported St Mary’s Church, The Friends of Old Basing, and Cancer Research UK amongst others.

Fiona continued: “We do quite a lot, on the charity side.”

The Best Supporting Business award was a new award category for Hampshire Royal British Legion, with the Old Basing Branch seeing it as an excellent opportunity to recognise and celebrate Oliver’s for the shops generous support.
