CHANGING facilities at a popular Basingstoke leisure facility have been left 'irreparable' following a suspected arson incident.

On Sunday, May 15, the accessible toilet and baby changing facilities at Chineham Park splash park are thought to have been targetted by vandals.

Posting to Facebook, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council wrote: "We were disappointed to find that the accessible toilet and baby changing facility at the Chineham Park splash park was damaged by fire yesterday and is now irreparable.

"This act of vandalism obviously has a financial cost but more importantly will affect the children and families using the water park while we arrange for a replacement.

"Due to high demand for portable toilet facilities we are currently unable to say when the unit will be replaced but we will keep residents updated via our social media channels.

"The incident will be reported to the police and anyone with information should let the police know by calling 101."

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "One Basingstoke crew were called at 13:49 on Sunday afternoon to extinguish a fire involving a portaloo at Chineham Play Park.

"The portaloo suffered approximately 10 per cent damage in the fire which was stopped using hose reels.

"Police were informed due to it being believed the fire was set deliberately.

"HIWFRS returned to station at 14:03."

The Gazette has contacted Hampshire Constabulary for comment.
