A CHARITY has planted a pair of trees in honour of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Basingstoke Lions club has planted two cherry trees in Basingstoke; the trees were planted in honour of The Queen’s upcoming Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The trees were planted on the grounds of the Old Basing Royal British Legion Social Club, on Crown Lane; this served as a tribute to The Queen, who has served as a Patron of the Royal British Legion since 1952.

The tree planting event was attended by Old Basing British Legion Social club manager Kyle Merritt, as well as Basingstoke Lions president Rex Sinden; BLC mascot Lennie The Basingstoke Lion was also in attendance.

The newly planted trees are just 2 of the 30 saplings that the Basingstoke Lions club has acquired from The Woodland trust and planted around the borough.

The locations the saplings have been planted at include the grounds of the Basingstoke College of Technology, Parklands Hospital, Audley’s Resource Centre, as well as various schools in the area.

This tree planting initiative is being run under the patronage of the Queen’s Green Canopy Initiative; this program was created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee by inviting people across the UK to “plant a tree for the jubilee”.

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, corporations and schools are being encouraged to play their part to enhance the environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October and March; plant will resume in October 2022 through to the end of the Jubilee year.

The Queen’s Green Canopy Initiative’s website features a map where all the trees that have been planted as part of the initiative can be viewed; including the trees planted by the Basingstoke Lions.
