EMERGENCY services closed the M3 after a major incident involving a man who was found with life-threatening injuries.

The man has been flown to hospital after being found on a live motorway carriageway.

The M3 was closed southbound close to Fleet and Farnborough for several hours from 10.30am on April 24.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called out at 10.25am this morning (24 April) following reports of concern for welfare on the M3 Junction 4A Southbound.

"A man was found on the carriageway in a live lane of traffic with potentially life-threatening injuries. He was taken to St. George’s Hospital via Air Ambulance.

"Junction 4 and Junction 4a Southbound remain closed at this time while officers establish the exact circumstances of the incident."

Hampshire Constabulary posted on its Facebook page that emergency services were attending the 'major incident' with closures in place.

However, National Highways announced at 12.30pm that the incident on the M3 west/southbound at junction 4A has been cleared and the road was fully open in both directions.

Traffic is now flowing east/northbound on the #M3 at J4a and the closure of that direction has been stood down. The #M3 west/southbound is being closed J4 to J4a and diversion info is here: https://t.co/i7pTqrCsXC. If you're within this closure you'll be directed off at J4a. pic.twitter.com/wtzOakwMSQ
