A SCHOOLGIRL from Sherfield-on-Loddon has become British Modern Tetrathlon champion.

Lily-Mae Lancaster Evans, aged 13, attends Sherfield School and won a gold medal in the gruelling multi-discipline competition which saw her compete in a swim, fencing and laser run to win the title in the U15G category.

She also won a gold team medal with her club - Leweston Pentathlon Academy, the Dorset-based club is one of the top clubs in the country.

The competition was held at Bath University earlier this month and she was delighted to have her medals presented to her by World Champion modern pentathlete Jamie Cooke.

Lily-Mae also trains regularly with Basingstoke and Mid Hants Athletic Club and several times a week with Basingstoke Bluefins.

Her achievements have seen her nominated and become a finalist two years running at the Basingstoke Sports Awards.

She has competed internationally with Team GB and has previously won two silver medals and a bronze medal at the UIPM World Modern Triathle Championships.

Last month she won a bronze medal at the ISA National Cross Country Championships.

Her mum Amanda Evans said: “Lily-Mae trains incredibly hard and absolutely loves what she does. Training in a multi-discipline sport such as Modern Pentathlon requires a lot of time and effort. She is extremely committed and loves what she does. She also has a lot of fun and has made some amazing friends through the sport. She is very lucky to have some amazing coaches who are so supportive. We are very proud of what she has achieved so far and excited to see what the future holds.”

Lily-Mae is now hoping to qualify for the European and World Championships in Modern Biathle, Modern Triathle and Laser Run later this year.
