A PROJECT to install nearly 700 metres of pipe to boost the capacity of Basingstoke’s water network has finished, following months of disruption on the roads.

South East Water installed a £500,000 new water main along Winchester Road to ensure customers’ water supply is not impacted by future growth in the town.

The work, which caused delays along Winchester Road while temporary traffic lights were installed, is now complete after three months.

As previously reported, South East Water apologised to motorists during the works after complaints were made that a large pile of soil dumped along the verge in Heather Way created a blind spot for motorists making the road ‘unsafe’.

Jeremy Dufour, South East Water project manager, thanked customers for their patience, describing the work as “short-term pain for the long term gain”.

He added: “Having started in January, I am really please at the speed in which our team has completed this vital project.

“This scheme was very much short-term pain for the long-term gain so I would like to thank the local residents and motorists for their continued patience during the scheme.”

All traffic management, including temporary traffic lights and a road closure at the junction of Heather Way and Lavender Road, have now been removed.

Jeremy added: “I know this road is a bury area and the traffic management will have caused some disruption but the community can now rest assured their water supply will not suffer as the population grows.”

The project was part of South East Water’s £433 million investment into its water network between 2020 and 2025.
