A NEW Starbucks café is set to open in Basingstoke as a plan has been submitted for its signage.

Sainsbury’s announced last month that 200 instore cafés were set to close, including the one in Wallop Drive, Basingstoke.

As part of the announcement, the supermarket giant said that it planned to open 30 Starbucks coffee shops in stores over the next year, now it has been confirmed that the Kempshott store will host one of those.

An application has been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for signage to advertise the new offering which will “shortly open”.

It continued: “This advertisement consent application includes details of the new signage at the Sainsbury’s foodstore, located off Wallop Drive, Basingstoke. The sign is considered to be appropriate given the nature and function of the foodstore and having regard to the character and appearance of the immediate area.”

It is understood that the café will close in around three weeks before work is undertaken to allow Starbucks to open.

When the café closures were announced, Sainsbury’s said staff affected will be “prioritised for vacant roles in Sainsbury’s stores and will be encouraged to explore alternative roles within the wider business”.

Elsewhere, the retailer said it will open the restaurant hubs in stores in partnership with Boparan Restaurant Group (BRG), which runs the Caffe Carluccio’s, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Ed’s Diner and Slim Chickens brands.
