A YOUNG football team from Basingstoke raised more than £1,000 for Ukraine by organising a 14-mile sponsored run.

Each member of Basingstoke Town Colts Under 11s Dragon team ran at least a leg, from their house to the next member’s house, while handing over Ukraine’s flag from the starting point to the finishing line.

Some of them ran multiple legs with one of them running almost eight miles.

The assistant coach of the team Gary and two parents, Ryan and Shabeer ran the whole leg of 14 miles, with the coach Paul Saunders followed the runners on his bike while nursing a broken toe.

A few other parents, siblings and cousins also joined the runners for some legs.

The run started from Old Basing at 1pm and concluded at the War Memorial park

The kids even had the energy for a game of football after the tiring run on a hot day that touched 18 degrees.

The team together raised £1,190 with the support of 66 people, while the target was £500. The fundraiser will go on for some more days for anyone else who wants to contribute.

Coach Paul said all proceeds will go directly to the International Red Cross to assist them in their humanitarian mission in Ukraine and its neighbouring countries.
