CCTV cameras have been put in a supermarket car park in a bid to clampdown on anti-social car meets.

Basingstoke Cops posted on its Facebook page that mobile cameras has been put in on Friday, March 11.

It said: "Our partners at Sainsbury’s Kempshott have arranged for a mobile CCTV unit to be placed in the car park following further issues with anti-social vehicle use last weekend.

"We hope this will act as a deterrent but it will also assist us with any enforcement action we decide to take.

"We would like to encourage residents to continue reporting large car meets through the 101 line so it can be filtered down to local policing units."

The move follows at least two weekends of anti-social behaviour at the car park at Sainsbury’s in Wallop Drive, which has been reported by fed-up residents.

One resident Mark Burrows said that car enthusiasts had been meeting on an “almost nightly occurrence” at around 9.30pm.

He said the “intense engine revving” had disturbed neighbours until midnight.

A petition for cameras to be installed attracted more than 200 signatures and a temporary mobile ANPR was installed, which will now be made permanent.

County councillor Stephen Reid also spoke out in support of the cameras.

The car meets are the latest in a series across Hampshire. Dispersal orders were brought in by police last month giving officers special powers to tell groups to move on at the industrial estate in Nursling and the industrial estate, Morrisons and Asda supermarkets in Calmore.

Car meets in supermarket car parks in Hedge End and also an industrial estate in Romsey have also sparked complaints from residents and attracted the attention of police.

Police also reminded people that they can report anti-social behaviour online.

They said: "Did you know that if you have a registration plate and dash cam/video evidence of vehicle crime, you can report it and upload footage via HantsSNAP? This can be done at orlo.uk/wRP7W Basingstoke Neighbourhood Policing Team."
