TWO school children from Basingstoke have been busy helping those who have been affected by the conflict in Ukraine.

The children from the Hurst School in Tadley helped to deliver a minibus full of donated items to a charity in Basingstoke co-ordinating local collections.

Year 7 student Lily-Mae Bell and Year 8 student Kieran Ciorovan approached head of year 7, Jake Rowell to ask if they could organise a collection, having seen and heard news reports about the situation in the country.

Jayne McLaren, headteacher, said: “I am incredibly proud of Lily-Mae and Kieran for showing their initiative and translating their ideas into actions. One of our school values is ‘community’ and we are proud of how the whole school community has come together to donate items to reach those people in need.”

The students sent out a message to tutor groups asking for selected items including warm clothing, toys for small children and toiletries to be brought into school and then helped load a school minibus full of items, which they then delivered to the collection point in Basingstoke.

Kieran added: “When I heard about what was happening in Ukraine, I knew I would regret it if I didn’t do everything I could to help.”

Lille-Mae was "really surprised by how much” they collected.
