A MAN carrying an axe, two knives and drugs was arrested in Winchester city centre after being spotted on CCTV.

The incident happened in Jewry Street on Friday, February 25 at 10.20pm.

A post from Winchester Police on Facebook said that a property close by was also searched and two swords were seized.

It said: "We wanted to update you following an incident which occurred on Jewry street on Friday evening.

"On Friday 25th February 2022 at 10:20pm the Winchester City CCTV control room spotted a male on Jewry Street carrying what was believed to be an axe.

"The Winchester High Harm Team were quickly on scene and seized the axe off the male. A subsequent search of the male's bag revealed that he was also carrying two knives and a quantity of drugs.

"A property close by was searched by the High Harm Team and two swords were seized under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 which bans the possession of dangerous items in a private place.

"A quantity of drugs was also seized from the property so the male was further arrested for possession with intent to supply.

"A 29-year-old male from City Road, Winchester was arrested for possession with intent to supply and offensive weapon offences.

"He was transported to Basingstoke custody where he was questioned and released under investigation. The investigation is still ongoing."
