DEAR Editor, Cllr Sean Dillow (Gazette, January 27) wants to cut speed limits on roads "across the whole town" and long term "particularly outside schools" from 30mph to 20mph.

While there may be a case for this outside schools in the hour at the start and end of the school day, and at lunchtime, the rest of the time it is unnecessary and is an excessive restriction on motorists.

30mph is not fast, and the vast majority of drivers are able to drive completely safely at that speed and often faster, where they judge it to be safe to do so. And those who can't arguably should not be behind the wheel at all.

Reduction of the limit to an obviously-too-slow speed on the basis that a collision at that lower speed is likely to reduce levels of injury misses the point that we should be aiming to prevent road traffic accidents completely, not reducing the impact should they unfortunately end up occurring.
