A CHINEHAM father died just days after his birthday after he “misjudged” a manoeuvre while overtaking a lorry.

Hayden Perrin was travelling on the A287 near Ewshot on April 23, 2021, when he was involved in a head-on crash with a Mini Cooper.

The trainee supervisor, of Maynards Wood, was taken to St Georges Hospital, in London, where he died on May 1 having suffered multi organ failure.

On Tuesday an inquest into his death took place at Winchester Coroner’s Court.

The inquest was told that Hayden, 22, was familiar with the road, having driven along it a number of times a week for around four months before his death while working on the A31 bypass outside Farnborough.

Eyewitness Reverend David Skillen said the Ford Transit van, driven by Hayden, carried out a “high-speed overtake”.

The Rev’d said that he saw the headlights of the Mini Cooper coming in the opposite direction and that both vehicles took action to avoid a crash but went in the same direction and collided.

He continued: “There was no way he (Hayden) could have adequately seen whether there was a vehicle coming. His manoeuvre was sharp, fast and sudden and appeared impatient, without judgement.”

Forensic collision investigator Michael Toy deemed that Hayden was travelling between 73 and 77mph as he overtook the lorry immediately prior to the collision.

As a result of the collision, three people sustained life-threatening injuries.

Area coroner Jason Pegg concluded that Hayden died as a result of a road traffic collision. He said: “Hayden appears to have misjudged his position and the approaching speed of the Mini Cooper and under estimated the amount of time to complete the manoeuvre.”

Speaking at the inquest Hayden’s father Warren said that he was “full of life”. He continued: “He was trying to find a career path, he struggled, after a number of fails he decided to join me at the company I work for. That last year and half he found his purpose. He was doing a fantastic job.”
