Three men were fined for getting on the train at Basingstoke Station without paying for a ticket.
All three cases were heard at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on January 13 this year, and resulted in hefty fines.
- Kwesi ASAMOAH, 20, boarded a SWR train at Basingstoke Station on May 18, 2021, without a valid ticket for travel
- Philip BIRD, 61, boarded a SWR train at Basingstoke Station on May 6, 2021, without a valid ticket for travel
- Andrew BULLER, 50, boarded a SWR train at Basingstoke Station on May, 16, 2021 without a valid ticket for travel
They were each fined £220, as well as an additional £25.70 in compensation, £34 to fund victim services, and £140 in costs.
The total each man must pay by February 10 this year is £419.70.
The offence went against byelaw 18(1) and 24 of the Railway Byelaws made under Section 219 of the Transport Act 2000 by the Strategic Railway Authority and confirmed under schedule 20 of the Transport Act 2000.
Byelaw 18(1) states: "In any area not designated as a compulsory ticket area, no person shall enter any train for the purpose of travelling on the railway unless he has with him a valid ticket entitling him to travel."
The verdict was proved through Single Justice Procedure where a magistrate judges the case on the basis of the papers alone without either party having to attend court for a hearing.
