A BOY was arrested on Friday night for carrying a knife before a football match between Albion and their bitter rivals Crystal Palace.

It was the only arrest in the city, while two more men were arrested on suspicion of assault outside the Amex Stadium in Falmer.

Three men were also detained for running on to the pitch at a football match, The Argus can reveal.

The 16-year-old boy, from Hove, was arrested in Queens Road, Brighton, on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon, fraud and carrying a firework.

He was charged and has been remanded on unconditional bail to appear in court on February 3.

Sussex Police confirmed two more men were arrested, a 30-year-old man from South Norwood in London on suspicion of assault at the Amex Stadium.

While a 21-year-old man from Brighton was also arrested at the Amex Stadium on suspicion of assault.

The two men have both been released under investigation, pending further enquiries from police.

Meanwhile, three men were detained for going on to the pitch at a football match.

Police seized a 30-year-old from Brighton, a 24-year-old from Burgess Hill, and a 22-year-old from Bexleyheath in London.

Files in all three of these cases have been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision.

Mark Lawrie, Superintendent for crime and operations in London and the South East confirmed that no officers were injured on Friday night.

A Sussex Police spokesman told The Argus: “Sussex Police made three arrests during the policing operation for the football match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace on Friday, January 14.

“A 16-year-old boy from Hove was arrested in Queens Road, Brighton on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon, a bladed article, a firework, and fraud. He was charged and remanded on unconditional bail to appear in court on February 3.

“A 30-year-old man from South Norwood was arrested at the Amex Stadium on suspicion of assault, he has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.

“A 21-year-old man from Brighton was arrested at the Amex Stadium of suspicion of assault, he has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.

“Meanwhile a further three people were detained for going onto the playing area at a football match. They were a 30-year-old man from Brighton, a 24-year-old man from Burgess Hill, and a 22-year-old man from Bexleyheath. Files in all three of these cases have been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision.”
