THESE eight pictures show the build-up in the city centre for Albion’s match against bitter rivals Crystal Palace on Friday.

There was a huge police presence in town, with dozens of police vehicles, officers on-foot, and police horses to control the crowds.

Despite most fans being civil, Sussex Police confirmed multiple arrests were made, with exact figures to be released later today.

Argus reporter Daniel Green, who was on foot in town, said: "Crowds I’ve seen have been mostly civil - possibly due to the huge police presence in the centre of town.”

Pubs around the station were packed full of Brighton fans, while Crystal Palace fans were largely based at the Wetherspoons in West Street.

One person who filmed from a flat near the station claimed people were throwing flares near police horses.

Bottles were thrown, as well as smoke bombs and bangers outside of Brighton Station near the Grand Central pub.

Pictures from the night show police in riot gear, as well as police horses, separating both sets of fans from each other while Crystal Palace fans were led up to get a train to the stadium.

At the stadium, there was also some confusion after the match with fans complaining of crowd congestion in the north east corner and from only being allowed out of one side of the north stand.

Fans described being “hemmed in the north stand in an uncomfortable crowd for far too long” and said there were also problems with crowding outside.

The club put out a statement yesterday.
