A ROAD has been closed by police following a 'serious collision' between Basingstoke and Andover this evening (Thursday, January 6).

The incident, which reportedly involved a pedestrian and a lorry, took place on the A303 westbound and is causing severe delays in the area.

Posting to Facebook at approximately 10.30pm, Hampshire Constabulary's forces incident manager, Inspector Matt Moss, said: "Unfortunately we have shut the A303 Westbound between the M3 and Bullington Cross whilst we deal with a serious collision.

"A diversion will be advised, and we currently have no ETA for reopening."

National Highways is reporting that the incident involved a pedestrian and a lorry, and has set out the advised diversion route in a statement on its website.

It reads: "This [closure] is following a collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry.

"Police lead the response to the ongoing incident and have closed the carriageway to allow them to work at scene.

"National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.

"Road users are advised to use the M3 and exit at J9. Then take the A34 northbound to the A303."

Several drivers have reported experiencing long queues resulting from the incident, with members of the Hampshire Drivers Facebook group saying there has been a knock-on effect to traffic flow on the M3 too.

This is a breaking news story and more details will be shared when they become available.
