A man has been taken to hospital after his car hit a lamppost on the ring road this morning.

One lane was closed on the southbound carriageway of the ring road between Thornycroft and Winchester Road Roundabout for over an hour this morning after the crash.

The grey BMW drove into a lamppost just before 8am with police officers and firefighters rushing to the scene.

A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said that one male casualty was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

The spokesperson continued: "Basingstoke firefighters were called to Ringway West at 07:58 this morning (09/11/21) to a road traffic collision where a car had driven into a lamppost.

"One male casualty was taken to hospital by SCAS. Firefighters returned to their station following the stop message at 08:17."

Hampshire Constabulary has been contacted for comment.

The road has since been reopened.
