A WELL-LOVED veteran has celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at a care home in Basingstoke.

George Hall enjoyed spectacular birthday celebrations at Marnel Lodge Care Home in Basingstoke on Monday, October 25.

The centenarian has lived in Basingstoke for over 20 years and was previously in the army during the second World War and served in various places including North Africa.

George was surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed a birthday cake especially made for the occasion.

Patricia Hall, George’s daughter-in-law has been married to George’s son John for 53-years. She said it was “quite emotional” to see him hit the milestone age.

She said: “It is quite emotional but very exciting to know that he is going to reach this great milestone and we thought let’s do everything we can to make an effort here.”

Patricia, who refers to George as ‘dad’ said the birthday party was well enjoyed by all.

She added: “George’s party went off very well and almost all family members from far and wide were able to get there, one grandson came all the way from Dubai.”

“George was somewhat overwhelmed wondering what all the fuss was about, but he certainly enjoyed all the attention and most especially, his birthday card from the Queen.

“It was very special as there were 5 generations of his family helping him celebrate his special day.”

George has also worked as a guard for Great Western Railway and went on to work in the car trade.

Patricia said he “is very much a royalist” so receiving a card from the Queen will be special for George.

Patricia and the whole family are very grateful for the care that George receives at the care home.

She added: “The whole family would like to extend a great big thank you to all staff of Marnel Care Home for the preparations and lovely food they laid out.”
