THERE were more than 1,000 new Covid cases in the borough in the most recent seven day period as speculation mounts that the government is set to implement stricter restrictions.

1,087 new Covid cases were recorded in the seven days to October 19, which was 21.7 per cent higher than the previous week.

Two areas of the borough have case rates among the highest in the country: Woolton Hill, Burghclere & Bishops Green; and Kempshott.

It comes as calls intensify for the government to implement its Plan B measures to curb a rise in cases.

The interactive map on the government website shows just how many people have tested positive for the virus in each area of the county over the seven-day period.

The government breaks down the numbers of coronavirus cases into neighbourhoods called 'Middle Super Output Areas' (MSOAs), which are smaller than council wards and based on population rather than geographical area.

The interactive map allows users to type in their postcode and see how many cases were reported in their area and if it has increased or decreased from the week before. The darker the colour on the image, the more positive test results have been recorded.

The map highlights which areas of the nation have three or more confirmed cases of the virus and colour co-coordinates the areas by how many cases they have.

Currently, there are 41 Covid patients at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as of October 19.

That number rose sharply at the start of July, but has remained relatively stable since the start of September.

In October, the number of patients in Hampshire hospitals reduced slightly before coming back up again. The Trust was caring for 249 Covid patients at its peak in January.

The trust, which runs Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover hospitals, admitted three Covid patients on October 17, the most recent day with statistics available, and has three patients on a ventilator, as of October 19.

In Basingstoke and Deane, 78.2 per cent of people aged 12 and above have had two doses of a Covid vaccine, as of October 23.

First doses have been given to 83.7 per cent of people aged 12 and above in the borough.

But in the week to October 24, there were no deaths within 28 days of a positive case in Basingstoke and Deane.

The total number of Covid deaths in the borough stands at 299.
