YOUNG people in Basingstoke have been sharing their views on plans to create a new youth space during a public consultation.

As part of an £110,000 project, in November last year Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council asked residents what improvements they would like to see made to the play park in Blackdown Close.

The space in Buckskin was first developed around 15 years ago but no longer meets the needs of children and young people. Recently the area has become a target for antisocial behaviour.

During the public consultation, the comments received have since been used to shape the final design of the park and to determine what new play equipment will be installed.

Councillor Simon Bound, cabinet member for communities, planning and infrastructure said: “It was great to see so many young who are passionate about the area they live in come together, talk about what they love about Buckskin and share their experiences.”

Two workshops have also been held led by local artist Rachel David and Graeme Farragher as well as officers from the council’s Arts and Events team at the Ridgeway Community Centre in Basingstoke.

The workshops allowed 10-year-olds and children over 11 to help shape a new art piece, which will be added to the floor in the park, using a range of street art and graffiti techniques.

Cllr Simon Bound added: “These workshops were a great opportunity for young people living in the area to work closely with local artists to shape a new art piece which they will be able to enjoy for years to come.”
