Plans for a new Taco Bell restaurant in Basingstoke are progressing after the chain submitted an application for a licence to sell alcohol on site.

Excitement is building after The Gazette revealed last month that the popular fast food chain was set to open a restaurant in Basingstoke.

It has submitted planning applications for a restaurant at 14-16 Wote Street, just outside Festival Place and next door to the Duck and Tipple bar.

One application has been submitted to erect a replacement shopfront, whilst a separate application has been submitted for illuminated signage.

The applications also contains glimpses of what the new restaurant might look like.

The artist's impressions feature the chain's iconic purple and white logo on a wooden cladding.

And this week, the group which run Taco Bell restaurants have also submitted a licence to sell alcohol.

It is proposing to sell drinks on site from Monday to Sunday between 11am and 11pm.

Members of the public are able to make comments on the application, by October 13.

Residents can make their representations by writing to the Head of Environmental Services at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Civic Offices, London Road, Basingstoke, RG21 4AH.

Meanwhile, the entrance to the former Subway restaurant has been boarded up, with the words 'Taco Bell' helpfully written next to the door.

Basingstoke Gazette:

There are currently 68 Taco Bell stores in the UK with the closest to Basingstoke in Reading or Southampton.

The fast-food restaurant offers a Mexican-inspired menu consisting of tacos, burritos, quesadillas and nachos.

Taco Bell is famous for it’s Tuesday deal where customers can purchase a taco and a Sol beer for two pounds.

There is no official date set for the opening of the new store and work on the premisses is yet to begin.

It comes just a week after The Gazette reported how one of Festival Place's restaurants has closed down, with another set to come to the town.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Festival Square has been emptied, whilst Five Guys has been officially confirmed as coming to Festival Place, although it is not known if it will directly replace the burger chain.
