A STAINED railway underpass in Winklebury has been transformed into an amazing piece of artwork, thanks to a group of professional local artists.

The railway tunnel between Winklebury Way and the Leisure Centre has been transformed by volunteers at the Winklebury Youth Project and the Basingstoke Independent Creative Network (BICN).

As part of the ‘Heartist’ underpass mural project, the volunteering artist are transforming a number of railway tunnels.

The first phase of the project has been commissioned by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

They worked on Winklebury underpass from July 27 to August 5.

They are also set to paint the railway bridge near Milestones Museum as the next project and are seeking funding to paint the bridge near Fyffes Group.

A spokesperson for the Basingstoke Independent Creative Network said the themes were inspired by true community connections and generated by local community groups.

“The artists have developed original artworks in response to these ideas, and are excited to share the outcomes in this public ‘gallery’.”

Sharing the photos of the underpass on Facebook group Winklebury Community Group, a resident wrote: “On my normal early morning walk yesterday after being away for a week, I was delighted to see that some artists have been working under the railway bridge on the white path from Winklebury way towards the Leisure Centre.

“Thank you to all the artists involved in this project. You made my day. You are very talented and have made a great improvement to the tunnel. Well done.”

Another person commented: “I was about to share this because I found this beautiful and better. I normally walk my nine-year-old daughter to swimming at the aquadrome and the dirty and bad things that used to be there weren't nice to see.

Very brave and thank you Angie Freeman and Jenny James [who led the works by Winklebury Youth Project].”

Another commented: “The people behind the project have driven this amazing piece of artwork for everyone in the community to enjoy.

“It really just goes to show what can be achieved when we work alongside groups like these to advance the outlook and future prospects of Winklebury.

“Discussions are already underway regarding other underpasses so hopefully this will not be the last. Huge thank you to all involved for your support in helping to make this happen”
