THE Top of Town’s former post office is now on sale, with an asking price of £1,750,000.

This “unique redevelopment opportunity in the heart of Basingstoke” totals 11,540 square feet of space, with the post office section on the ground floor, and office areas above.

It has a flat roof and large front on London Street, with separate access to the rear.

In April 2019, the Post Office closed its doors, with the facility moving into the WH Smith store in the Malls.

The controversial move was unpopular with many, including members of the Basingstoke Constituency Labour Party (CLP) and Communication Workers Union (CWU) who gathered at the Top of the Town in December 2018 to get as many signatures objecting to the proposal as possible.

Then Hampshire County Council councillor for the Basingstoke Central division, Michael Westbrook, said at the time: “This is such a vital part of our community. It is easily accessible for residents and putting it into a franchise with WHSmith is a downward spiral.

“There are a vast range of services available for people here in what is a fair recently refurbished store.”

But after the move went ahead, the unit lay empty and is now ready for a new lease of life.

It is being marketed by Avison Young, and the full listing with interior pictures is available to view here.
