AN EQUAL number of Southampton’s 31 Covid clusters saw cases rise and decrease in the latest seven-day data period.

Public Health England’s latest data showed that in the week to-July 23, 14 districts recorded increased cases, with another 14 seeing cases decline. Three areas saw no change.

Of the areas that saw decreases, Banister Park and Howard Road (down 18 cases to 47) recorded one of the most significant drops – despite still noting high case numbers. Bitterne East was another, dropping 21 cases to 32.

Two others to see similar rates were Newtown and Nicholstown – 57 cases, down 29, and Redbridge and Millbrook West – 37 cases, down 30.

Southampton as a whole recorded 1,216 cases, down 62 cases or -4.9%. This left the city with an average infection rate of 481.5, or one case per 207 people.

In comparison to Hampshire, the area recorded 4,558 cases, down 1,427 cases or -23.8% in the same time period. It was left with an infection rate of 329.7, or one case per every 303 people. The Hampshire data does not include cases from Southampton or Portsmouth.

Clusters are shown when there are three or more new cases reported at any one time.

Anywhere with between zero and two cases are shown in white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure", the Government organisation states.

There were no areas of Southampton that recorded fewer than three cases in the seven days to-July 23.
