THE reopening of the newly-refurbished play area in one of Basingstoke’s most popular parks has been delayed by more than three months.

As previously reported by the Gazette, work began on the £495,000 revamp scheme in War Memorial Park in March 2021, with the project initially due to be completed by April.

It consisted of a children's play area, skate park, upgraded pump track, parkour park and outdoor gym equipment.

However, with the summer holidays now in full swing, the children’s play area remains closed, to the annoyance of many families.

One parent told the Gazette that she was “frustrated” by the lack of an opening date.

The Gazette asked the council why the scheme had taken longer than expected, and when residents could expect the areas to open.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s cabinet member for the natural environment, Cllr Mark Ruffell, said: “Improvement works at the War Memorial Park play area began in March 2021, following a public consultation to identify ideas for a new and larger play area. The works were originally due to be completed at the end of April 2021, but due to installation team delays, a revised completion date of July 2021 was agreed.

“This week, the final snagging issues are being resolved, and inspections are taking place. The area will then open as soon as they have been completed satisfactorily.”

Cllr Ruffell added: “The safety of the children in our borough is our highest priority and therefore it is important that residents do not use the equipment until the fencing is removed and the play area is ready to be used.”
