A BASINGSTOKE woman will be sentenced next month after a brawl on a Hampshire town's high street.

Victoria Catherine O'Brien, of Fullbrook Drive, previously admitted a string of charges following an altercation on Alton High Street on June 5.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to four assaults and one count of affray, and sobbed in the dock on Friday morning as the judge said there was a likelihood she could be sent to prison.

She stands co-accused with Mitchell Scott Ricketts, of Belle View, Wokingham, who admitted two counts of assault, one count of affray and a public order offence.

The pair were due to be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on Friday, but the court was told that a pre-sentence report had not been prepared for Ricketts because he did not answer the phone when the probation service rang.

His barrister, Hannah Hurley, said the 27-year-old's phone had been playing up and that the missed calls did not even register on his call log.

Judge Jane Miller QC was left "unimpressed" over the excuse, but decided to adjourn the sentencing for both defendants.

She told the court: "I am very unimpressed by the reason why Mr Ricketts does not have a pre-sentence report.

"Both defendants need to be sentenced together. The sensible thing is to adjourn for a further period."

Addressing the defendants, she continued: "This adjournment is largely caused by your failure Mr Ricketts to pick up the phone to the probation service.

"I really don’t accept your reason of a faulty phone."

However, she warned them: "Just because I am adjourning doesn’t mean you won’t be sent to custody."

They have been released on bail, with both defendants being required to live and sleep at their listed addresses and they must not enter Alton.

The pair will be sentenced on August 6.
