A BASINGSTOKE man allegedly in possession of Class A drugs has been arrested on suspicion of causing a collision on West Ham Roundabout on Worting Road while fleeing the police on Sunday afternoon.

A woman who was involved in the collision suffered minor injuries, according to police.

The man, 28, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and possession of a Class A drug.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary told the Gazette: “Officers attempted to stop the black Volkswagen Polo just before 3pm on Sunday (July 4).

“A short pursuit followed before the vehicle drove the wrong way around the roundabout causing a collision with another vehicle.

“Minor injuries were reported and a woman has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

“The driver of the Volkswagen Polo decamped and made off from the collision before being located by officers on Euskirchen Walk.

“A 28-year-old man from Basingstoke has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, and possession of a Class A drug. He remains in custody at this time.”

Firefighters from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) also attended the scene and they were required to extricate the woman from her car.

A spokesperson for HIWFRS told the Gazette: “At 3.13pm [on Sunday] Basingstoke crews were called to a road-traffic-collision involving two vehicles on the West Ham Close roundabout near to the fire station.

“HIWFRS firefighters were required to extricate a casualty from one of the vehicles involved, before passing her into the care of ambulance service paramedics. 

“Crews returned to station following the stop message at 3.55pm.”
