WASP season has officially begun in Basingstoke, an expert has revealed.

Speaking to the Gazette on Monday (June 28), Shane Jones of Kempshott-based company RIDTEK Pest Control, said "today's the day" as he treated his first wasp nest in the town this year.

He continued: "We have treated our first Basingstoke wasps nest in a garden in Old Basing. Although the weather is a bit dodgy this usually represents the start of summer for us.

"A little bit behind this year, possibly due to the very wet May we experienced. This can have an impact on Queen wasps emerging from hibernation, especially if there is a short supply of insects that the queens feed on."

Shane posted a video to his Youtube channel, showing the work he does with wasps, and celebrating an exciting time of year for him. However, he also added some safety advice for Basingstoke residents.

He said: "I would also like to point out that any persons that are allergic to wasps or bee stings to check their epipens are in date.

"With the challenges of Covid and Brexit still upon us and the unseasonable weather, then epipens may not be at the top of everyone's agenda so its good to check and make sure if you use one it is in date."
