OUR beloved pets mean everything to us and have been our cuddly companions throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
This is why we launched the Basingstoke Gazette and Andover Advertiser Pet Idol 2021 competition, to give a platform to doting dogs, cuddly cats, huggable hamsters, perfect parrots and even a spoilt skunk!
Animal lovers from across Basingstoke and Andover have been telling us all about the antics of their furry friends and just how much their pets have meant to them during the pandemic.
The entries for the contest are now in and we're looking for votes from our readers to decide which furry or fabulous friend should be crowned this year's winners.
The gallery above shows 263 entries from Basingstoke readers. These photos along with 74 entries from Andover were published in the Basingstoke Gazette yesterday (June 10) and Andover Advertiser today (June 11).

Why does your pet deserve to be crowned Basingstoke Gazette and Andover Advertiser Pet Idol 2021 winner?Daisy is such loving company and will always seek out my lap in an evening. Daisy will just be with me every moment if she could, loyal, caring and adorable (Also very smelly, fluffy and a silly billy at times!). We wanted a dog for my eldest son’s anxiety, we heard a lot about how pugs make wonderful companions for young children and the benefits of having a dog in your family environment. My youngest boy, early bird Stanley (6) gets up every morning to let her out and Daisy will lap sleep with him until it’s breakfast time. Our life has changed having this 4 legged quirky looking creature - she loves to be loved and in return gives us happy smiles for days. Her dry sense of humour does make her more human than doggy at times! We love you Daisy - thank you for getting us out in the fresh air daily and supporting us with endless love just when we needed it the most during a difficult covid19 pandemic.

Why does your pet deserve to be crowned Basingstoke Gazette and Andover Advertiser Pet Idol 2021 winner?I'd like to introduce Honey Bunny.. my 1yr old Giant Contintental (she is not fully grown yet, another 6m to go!) - she has her own bedroom, she is litter trained and has free roam of the house and garden. Some may say she is spoilt, I'd say she is loved and very much part of our family. Honey arrived at the end of June 2020, at 12 weeks old and she has been my saviour throughout this pandemic and the lockdowns. She has made me smile, laugh and cheers me up when I'm feeling in a funk, she gives me a reason to get up in the morning (if I'm not up by 6.30am she makes noise and merry hell in her room), she knows when I need her and the calming action of stroking her is a great stress reliever. Honey has a fun, unique personality which, to me, makes her special. For me, she's emotional support and I thank my lucky stars every day that we found each other.

Like many other cats he loves comfort and convenience. What could be better than a good sleep on a sofa in front of a sunlit window? Nothing! Well, some of the cat treats come close. But it is not all day like this, there is always some time for Finn to play, to chase that bee in the garden, and to do some of photo shoots for his Instagram @golden.cheeks.cat - Finn is a hardworking meowdel! (What is meowdel? It is like a photo model, but the one that can meow from time to time). He earns all his food and toys himself, but it takes a lot of effort. He is a rescue from Spain where he was found wandering the streets, he was very underweight and had a lump on his back where he had suffered some sort of impact. A kind foster family took him in & he underwent surgery to have the lump removed, luckily it was benign. A wonderful charity Placed him up for adoption & We fell in love with him the minute we saw him, we paid for his transit over & he became a member of our family. He is the most wonderful affectionate boy with a cheeky character, he makes us laugh every day with his antics. He has brought so much joy into our lives & we can’t imagine our lives without him.

As she is a houdini (she ate the cone of shame the day after surgery) we had to put a swim hat and long sleeve swim top on her just to keep her bandages clean and dry when she went outside. She is amazing with our 4 kids especially as 3 of them have autism.

My decesed Aunt rescued him 2 years ago where he was in his old owners house for 3 days as he'd passed away. Then Crackers also lost my aunt in April, so hes now with me. Why does your pet deserve to be crowned Basingstoke Gazette and Andover Advertiser Pet Idol 2021 winner?We adopted Scout from a Romanian dog rescue charity during lockdown one (once borders opened for transport) in July 2020. After an hot, arduous 3-day journey by van, this quiet little 5-month old puppy, with the biggest ears I’ve ever seen, immediately became one of the family. She settled into our home, and quickly found her voice - Scout really enjoys her food, playing with her ball, going on treat hunts, mixed in with a nap or two! She was very easy to train, and the children taught her a few tricks (as well as how to operate the stairs); Scout quickly developed into very intelligent, sociable and a lovable, ball of energy. Although she didn’t have the best start in life, she is full of character, who can also be very strong-willed and stubborn. Definitely one-of-a-kind, and constantly gets stopped whilst out walking as people enjoy saying hello and trying to guess what mix of breed she is!

After a hectic start to life, he’s settled into his new ‘furever’ home just perfectly & as you can see, he’s pretty happy about it! Not too fussed on toys, treats are definitely the way to his heart, loves a cuddle, but will find the sunny spot on the office floor & stretch right out for a snooze. He does sleep downstairs, but don’t worry - his loud, door shaking, snoring lets us know he’s safe. We love you & so happy you’ve your home with us.

His brother Oreo sadly passed away last year and he has settled amazingly without his companion and now being on his own. She was used for breeding, never went out and was in rubbish condition. She has big dangly nipples, a large saggy mini and her fur was hay. Now she’s super happy and smiley. Silky soft and loving life with her chihuahua siblings. She’s so loving and so smart... and loves a toy to thrash about. But her favourite thing EVER is food!!

I often ask who rescued who. Before we got kaizer, I was having a really bad period with my depression. I got in to a really bad place, however adopting kaizer was the best thing we have ever done, he's my reason to get up in the morning. Sadly we lost his brother last October and at first chong really missed him. Chong has a very large character and his more like a dog. He never leaves our side. He chases ball and talks constantly. He brings us so much joy. Chong carries the calichi virus in cats so cannot be housed with other cats. But he is our perfect feline. 💜

She is 2.5 years old and the friendliest most loveable cat alive (I’m sure everyone says that) She greets our neighbours in the shared hallway and is so friendly to the postman that he now brings her treats! Nova taught us what it was like to be parents and has kept us both great company during lockdown. She drinks exclusively from the tap, eats only the best and falls asleep instantly when she is on a lap. She is very chatty and talks incessantly to the birds outside the window. She even has her own Instagram account. She deserves to be the Pet Idol because she is beautiful both inside and out.

If the children are unwell, he knows and will get up under the blankets and snuggle up to them. Zeus came to us at 5 weeks due to his mum being unwell. We hand reared him, he's the most affectionate dog you could ask for but is petrified of cats. Zeus is forever asleep and doesn't bark.

He has a lot of love to give and is constantly following me round the house even to the toilet (only because he’s waiting for an empty toilet roll to rip up) He loves adventures in the woods and is very photogenic to say the least. At first she was very scared but has now totally come out of her shell. She’s the most loving dog ever and loves to chase rabbits, squirrels and deer’s. I think it brings her back to her street dog memories. I wouldn’t change her for the world 🌎 She’s a warrior ❤️

Why does your pet deserve to be crowned Basingstoke Gazette and Andover Advertiser Pet Idol 2021 winner?Daisy is a 7 year old pug from basingstoke, she is the most wonderful and loving dog a family could ask for, she is our best friend and a comfort to our young children, she let's our oldest daughter play hospitals and use her stethoscope on her, which has helped a lot as our daughter was born with a heart condition. Unfortunately Daisy is currently recovering from an operation to remove mast cell tumors. She deserves to be the winner because she is the best dog I could ever wish for.

She come over to the UK to start a new life with us. Since arriving she was scared and doing want to be touched, but that all changed! Gracie has done UK sniffer dog training and mantrailing which has given her so much confidence as well as she comes to work with me. Gracie now loves life and having a good cuddle and a tasty treat.

She came to us frightened and untrained but in the last five years she has come a long way. She has learnt to love and live again. She’s had a bounce mastectomy due to over breeding and most of her teeth removed. She loves life and her family a truly precious little girl.

She is just a proper cat in every sense of the word. Playful, eccentric, loving and does whatever she wants on her own terms. She loves licking her fleece then sitting there with her tongue hanging out or laying on the floor on her back with her paws waving in the air. As someone who suffers with depression I have found lockdown very difficult, as I live alone. So he pops round every morning to check how I am. Often later in the day he heads to another neighbour to see her and play with their dog. Quite the character and friends with everyone in the close.
