ONE motorist had a stroke of luck afternoon after their car broke down outside the AA's headquarters.

The driver of a black Volkswagen made the mistake of filling up their car with diesel instead of petrol.

But they could not have chosen a better place to break down, as the car came to a halt right outside of AA headquarters in Basing View, Basingstoke.

AA posted a picture on social media writing: “If ever there is a good spot to breakdown our HQ is it! On my best behaviour doing this one.”

According to the AA website, misfuelling is a common mistake with their technicians fixing over 15,000 wrong fuel mishaps a year-on average, that is around than 41 a day.

AA state that nine out of 10 cars that have be misfuelled can be fixed at the roadside and take an average of 45 minutes to repair.

Putting diesel in a petrol can clog up the spark plugs and fuel system meaning often, a car won’t start.

Whilst AA state the mishap can be ‘a real pain’ they add that a petrol engine ‘shouldn't have any permanent damage’ once the fuel is drained out.
