A Vauxhall Astra car has been set on fire in Basingstoke yesterday.

According to police, the incident happened at 3.44am on Quilter Road in Basingstoke.

The fire caused partial damage to an Audi car too that was parked close by.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service told the Gazette: "Basingstoke fire engine was called out at 3.42am yesterday morning to a vehicle fire on Quilter Road. 

"Two cars were affected by the fire, one suffering 50 per cent damage and the other 15 per cent damage. 

"The blaze was extinguished using two sets of breathing apparatus and one hose reel, before police were called to attend the scene.

"HIWFRS firefighters left following the stop message at 4.13am."

Police are treating the incident as suspicious.

Hampshire Constabulary has now issued an appeal for witnesses in connection with the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.44am yesterday, 19 May, by our colleagues in the fire service to reports of a Vauxhall Astra on fire on Quilter Road. The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious.

“Officers have conducted a number of enquiries and are now turning to the public for any information that could assist in their investigation.

“Were you in the area at the time? Perhaps you saw or heard something suspicious?
