Five months ago, Alison Barlow was battling for her life in an intensive care unit at Basingstoke Hospital.

Down with acute pancreatitis and her dear ones not at her bedside, the 61-year-old was only hoping to get back home and meet her husband as soon as possible.

Yesterday (Thursday), Alison became a part of Basingstoke’s history as she received the 100,000th Covid vaccine administered by The Hampshire Court Hotel in Chineham.

From the four gruelling weeks in a hospital bed, Alison has come back stronger to become the lucky one to receive the milestone jab at one of the best vaccination centres in the country.

“I feel proud to receive the milestone jab,” she told the Gazette.

“I received my first vaccination at Basingstoke Fire Station. So when it was time for the second jab, I chose The Hampshire Court Hotel.

“I feel really happy.”

Alison’s husband Peter is a volunteer for the vaccination programme at The Hampshire Court Hotel.

He said the four weeks Ali was in hospital was extremely difficult for him.

“I could not be with her,” he told the Gazette.

“When Ali went in first, they thought she might have had Covid. So they put her in an isolation ward. Then they moved her to another ward when they found she didn’t have Covid.

“We were using Zoom, giving Ali a mobile phone. But it was good to see her progress in real time without having to break any protocols. So that was amazing.”

The reason Peter decided to become a volunteer at Hampshire Court Hotel is to give back the wonderful treatment his wife received at Basingstoke hospital.

“When we saw that there was an ask for volunteers for the vaccine centre, I said I’m gonna go do this because I want to give back to these wonderful people.

"And I have been doing this since end of January. I met some amazing people, and the process is so good.

“For me this is a good pack and I just love them.”
