Police have said that a campervan fire in Beggarwood last night was suspicious.

Five fire engines were called out to the blaze on Old Beggarwood Lane just before 3.45am on Thursday (April 22).

There were no injuries, but it did spread to the roof of an adjacent block of houses.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said that they were investigating the cause.

Now, Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that they too were called out to the scene and that it is currently being treated as suspicious.

"We were called at 3.50am today, 22 April, to reports of a fire in a Ford Motor Caravan on Old Beggarwood Lane, Basingstoke," a spokesperson said.

"No one was injured in the fire, but it is being treated as suspicious."

It comes after a number of caravan fires in the town in recent months.

The police have said that they will "review similar crimes and link where evidentially appropriate", adding that "this work is ongoing".
