Basingstoke residents have the opportunity to put their burning climate change-related questions to the individuals who will be vying for their vote at a hustings next week.

Basingstoke Transition Network, a voluntary group passionate about climate crisis, has invited all the major party groupings standing locally in the upcoming council elections to take part in an online hustings.

The event will be streamed at 7pm on Wednesday, April 21, on The Gazette's Facebook page, Zoom and on YouTube.

Residents are also invited to submit questions to candidates via secretary@basingstoketransition.org by Saturday, April 17.

BTN’s aim is to encourage the transition of the borough and its surroundings to a low-carbon, low-waste community that encourages biodiversity and seeks climate justice.

In a statement, BTN said: “On May 6, we will choose who will be in power for the next three years. These will be the three most important years in responding to the climate emergency. This is our last chance to elect people who can respond. Making changes in 2024 will be too late."

“We need to be carbon neutral by 2030. And that means the decisions our Council make in the next three years will determine if the response is adequate.”
