A 'HUGE crowd' of police officers with dogs spotted at Basingstoke railway station yesterday were part of a 'proactive operation', British Transport Police has confirmed.

Members of the public spotted the officers and dogs outside the station in the early evening on Tuesday (March 24), with one witness saying they saw a "huge crowd of police dogs" and that "something is going down".

However, British Transport Police told the Gazette that the sight was part of a "proactive operation" named 'Operation Tremmor' - a joint operation with Network Rail to help deter railway-related crimes, including thefts of train track parts.

A BTP spokesperson added: "It is a high visibility operation using police dogs, and uniformed and plain clothed officers.

"Primarily, it’s for reassurance, encouraging everyone to feel safe when using the railway."
