THE COUNCIL is developing a plan to link a number of green spaces to the east of Basingstoke.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council are developing a masterplan showcasing its vision for parks and green spaces in the area, which would create walking and cycling corridors and enhance biodiversity.

Using the historic route of the Basingstoke canal to connect the areas of Old Basing, Lychpit and Hatch with Festival Place, the council say that it will improve green links along the River Loddon valley.

The linked network of parks would include Eastrop Park, War Memorial Park, Black Dam Ponds, Crabtree Plantation and the Lime Pits.

Cabinet member for planning, infrastructure and natural environment, Cllr Mark Ruffell, said: “The borough’s excellent framework of parks and green spaces are key to the quality of life for residents and wildlife in the borough, both now and in the future.

“They form part of our vision to create a masterplan for the natural environment covering the whole area between Old Basing and Basingstoke and I am delighted we are moving this exciting project forward.”

The authority has appointed The Environmental Partnership to develop and outline plan for the area, which will include creating better links across the ring road, protecting habitats at the likes of Crabtree and Black Dam, developing links for walkers, runners and cyclists, and enhancing historic assets.
