A VEHICLE hit a railway bridge between Basingstoke and Overton this morning, leading to travel delays.

This incident took place at around 10.55am on Oakley Lane.

South Western Railways reported that services between Basingstoke and Overton were delayed or cancelled.

They said: "We were earlier informed that a road vehicle had struck a bridge between Overton and Basingstoke."

However,  they added: "Staff have inspected the bridge and all lines have now reopened", with delays expected until about 12.30pm.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "I can confirm that we’ve had reports of a vehicle striking a bridge on Oakley Lane at 10.55am this morning (15 March) but is being handled by British Transport Police and Network Rail." 

A BTP spokesperson added: "British Transport Police received a report of a minor bridge strike involving a vehicle at 10.56am today (15 March).

"Trains were running under caution for a period, however there was assessed to be no damage to the bridge."

The road remains open, and no signs of the incident are visible.

Meanwhile, AA Traffic updates rwere reported a road closure on Andover Road (B3400) at the same time, between the junctions with Station Road and Ivy Down Lane in Oakley. However, the Gazette can confirm that this was unrelated to the incident, and the closure was for scheduled resurfacing work which is now complete, with the road reopening to all vehicles shortly before 12.30pm.
