When will Marwell Zoo reopen?

Animal lovers don't have to wait long for zoos to reopen.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that outdoor attractions including zoos and safari parks will be allowed to open from Monday, April 12, onwards - providing the virus continues to subside.

As part of the PM's plan, zoos will reopen during step two.

Basingstoke Gazette:

To begin with, zoos will have to make sure it is possible to visitors to enjoy the experience while adhering to social distancing measures. This could be lifted further in the summer.

Many establishments such as Marwell Zoo already have one-way systems in place from when they reopened in 2020.

What's been happening at Marwell Zoo since it was closed?

According to its social media platforms, the animals have been well looked as staff continue to work during lockdown.

Though the popular tourist attraction did make headlines last month when two videos circulated on social media showing thugs who broke into the park appearing to abuse and scaring animals.

Officers were called at 11.40pm on Monday, February 8, after a member of the public saw footage of people breaking into the site on social media.

Entry had been forced to the site, and multiple buildings within the grounds, causing significant damage.

The videos have been met with outcry online, with some social media users branding the group as "disgusting", "yobs", and "vile".

A Marwell Zoo spokesperson, said at the time: “We are aware of the appalling videos being circulated online showing our endangered animals in distress and we continue to assist the police with their investigation.

"Our animals are all safe and those affected are being carefully monitored and cared for by our expert animal teams.”

A 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man, both from Fareham, and a 22-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman, both from Gosport were released from custody while an investigation is ongoing.
