BASINGSTOKE'S MP has said she "is not in a position to comment" on the allegations of racism by the Royal Family revelaed in last night's high-profil interview of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

When approached by the Gazette for her reaction, Mrs Miller said: "The interview isn't being broadcast until this evening, so not having seen it I am not in a position to comment."

While the interview aired last night in the US, it will be shown in full for the first time on British television this evening, at 9pm on ITV.

Maria Miller has previously spoken out about the need for action against racism, launching an enquiry into racism in Basingstoke following the death of George Floyd last year, the results of which were published in December.

She said at the time: "‘A better understanding needs to go hand in hand with action.

"I want Basingstoke to be a great place to live, for everyone regardless of their ethnicity, so I will hold an update with the relevant public services and organisations in the Spring. In the meantime, I will continue to work to help ensure that the issues raised are taken forward, to make our community fairer and more equal for all."

Mrs Miller's decision to withold comment comes after the Prime Minister also chose not to comment when asked about the interview and allegations at this evening's press conference in Downing Street.

Boris Johnson said: "I have always had the highest admiration for the Queen and the unifying role that she plays in our country and across the Commonwealth.

"As for all other matters to do with the Royal Family, I have spent a long time now not commenting on Royal Family matters and I don't intend to depart from that today."
