Four women are creating a new web comedy series called Dead Town based on Basingstoke.

The artists are crowdfunding to help them get a series filmed and are offering people a role as extra or a walking tour of Basingstoke as reward.

Chlose Van Harding, Jodi Hutton, Lisa Johnson and Nadine Banton are the creators behind the series.

Chloe, the writer and producer, said Dead Town follows four unconventional characters – Max, Rachel, Nicole and Megan – over 24 hours as they have to deal with an unwanted criminal in their Basingstoke apartment.

“We like to think of it as a dark sitcom," she added.

“Although it has themes like friendship, female independence and life post-Covid, we also want to address the subject of domestic abuse.

“We have also decided to donate 10 per cent of our final funding to Refuge, a charity for women and children against domestic violence.”

The creators have said the project was inspired by series like Chewing Gum, Love Sick, Worst Week of My Life and Pandemonium.

A project page created on greenlit.com has so far collected £935 as of Monday 4pm, while their target is £5,000.

Chloe said: “We understand if you cannot donate at this difficult time. But even showing us some support on social media will give us a huge boost of confidence and help us along our journey.

“We also got some fantastic rewards to offer you, including being an extra in one of the episodes and a walking tour of Basingstoke itself.”

Jodi said they have a mini-series of five five-minute episodes ready to go.

She added: “There are many things to think about in terms of budgeting, including cameras, lights, crew, location, and making the set completely Covid-secure.”

Lisa said they have spent over 14 months developing stories and characters.

“Now we're in the process of contacting various filmmakers with the aim to shoot in May this year.”

Nadine added: “One of the reasons we wanted to create this web series is because we wanted something for everyone to watch and enjoy. We have huge plans to take it further like festivals and even a second series. However we are going to need your help.”
