BORIS Johnson is set to address the nation in a live Downing Street press conference later today.

His spokesperson has confirmed that the Prime Minister will respond to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview that aired in the US last night and will be streamed on ITV later today.

The controversial interview has raised concern after it was alleged that a member of the royal family made racist remarks.

Meghan told Winfrey there had been “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he is born”.

Harry suggested his family were jealous of Meghan’s popularity with the public – just as the appeal of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, had reportedly been seen as a threat.

The duchess’ admission was one of a series of astonishing claims that included revealing she had suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy.

The duchess revealed that working for The Firm – as the royal family is sometimes known – ultimately left her feeling that ending her life was an option, and how she had not been protected by the monarchy.

Asked explicitly by Winfrey if she was thinking of self-harm and having suicidal thoughts at some stage, Meghan replied: “Yes. This was very, very clear.

“Very clear and very scary. I didn’t know who to turn to in that.”

The press conference will start at 4pm and be available on all major news channels such as BBC and Sky News as well as being lived streamed on social media sites like Facebook and YouTube.

The Prime Minister is also expected to address the change in coronavirus restrictions, International Women’s Day, the vaccine rollout and give a coronavirus figures update.

The press conference is planned for earlier than the usual time 5pm due to internal diary considerations in No10.
